Joanna Bigelow is a visual artist based in Annapolis, Maryland, whose work explores character, atmosphere, and the emotional presence of a subject.

Working primarily in oil and charcoal, Bigelow moves between portraiture, figurative work, and landscape. Her work begins with close observation but extends beyond straightforward representation, looking for the expression, light, gesture, or atmosphere that gives a subject its particular character.

This sensibility carries throughout her practice—from the psychological presence of her portraits to landscapes shaped by weather, memory, and changing light. Across subjects, Bigelow is interested in the moment when something familiar begins to feel slightly transformed.

Her work has received recognition through the Portrait Society's Emerging Artist Competition and has appeared in film production, editorial features, and the secondary auction market.

Bigelow is also a founding member of Studio 67, an artist collective and creative space in Annapolis dedicated to supporting artists and cultivating a more artist-driven local arts community. Alongside her studio practice, she works as an art educator and takes on select commissions and collaborative projects.
